About Africa Movement Building Space (AMBS):

The Africa Movement Building Space (AMBS) is an unbranded platform that embraces Pan-Africanism and Ubuntu in the interconnected plights affecting the continent. While there are many initiatives to address some of the key issues affecting Africa, none look at how these challenges are interconnected and work on a big-picture approach to addressing these interrelated concerns.

Duration: 6 Months (renewable once)

Role Overview

Reporting to the AMBS Convenor, this position is a perfect fit for those who have just graduated from school and believe hugely in Pan-Africanism and Ubuntu. Apply for this position if you believe that there is a need for the continent to be united if it is to dismantle the shackles of fossil fuels and speak with one voice. This position within a Pan-African think-do- tank offers a unique chance to contribute to a critical mission on a continental scale.

Objectives:

a)    To gain practical experience in climate movement building and how it is interconnected with other Pan-African plights.

b)    Engage with local communities, policymakers, CSOs and other key stakeholders to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaborative Pan-African solutions.

c)     Assist in conducting research, analysis and reporting to support AMBS’s advocacy and programmatic work.

d)    Contribute to AMBS’s ongoing campaigns on movement-building initiatives.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in coordinating and providing support to AMBS’s team.

  2. Aid in the design, execution and monitoring of campaigns to raise public awareness and support for climate movement building in Africa.

  3. Contribute to data analysis on movement building, challenges and opportunities in the African context.

  4. Contribute to the development of policy briefs, research papers, or other knowledge products related to climate movement building in Africa.

  5. Conduct field visits and engage with local communities to understand the grassroots needs and ensure they feature prominently in AMBS’s movement-building efforts.

  6. Assist to organise, promote and run virtual and in-person climate and movement building events and convenings within the continent and provide organising support to nurture their impact and effectiveness.

  7. Build and coordinate strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.

  8. Represent AMBS in coalition activities and partner meetings as necessary.

  9. Contribute to the AMBS’s overall mission and strategic objectives related to climate change in Africa.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Climate Change and Development, Environmental Science, Renewable Energy, Sustainable Development.)

  2. Demonstrate a strong understanding and interest in Africa’s Climate movement-building needs, with a solid understanding of the challenges and opportunities specific to Africa on climate.

  3. Ability to conduct thorough research, analyse data and synthesise complex information into clear, actionable insights.

  4. Proficient in both written and verbal communication, capable of crafting compelling messages and engaging with diverse audiences.

  5. Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse cultural, political and economic contexts within Africa.

  6. Ability to develop strategic plans, set goals and identify the necessary steps to achieve campaign objectives.

  7. Skilled in building and maintaining relationships with a variety of stakeholders.

  8. Demonstrable commitment to social and environmental justice.

  9. Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and the resilience to overcome challenges in dynamic and sometimes uncertain environments.

  10. Ability to work effectively in a team, fostering collaboration and building consensus among diverse groups.

Experience:

The ideal AMBS Fellow should have:

  1. Permission to live and work in any African country, preferably in Kenya.

  2. Ability to work in small, dynamic teams. The candidate should be comfortable working remotely.

  3. Knowledge and experience in campaigning and mobilisation.

  4. Ability to analyse issues in terms of campaign opportunities and in terms of overall strategic objectives.

  5. Strong problem-solving, analytical and negotiation skills.

  6. Ability to make and maintain effective contacts and relationships with partners and other stakeholders.

  7. Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people, both verbally and in writing.

Stipend

The AMBS Fellow is a full-time position. The candidate will receive a competitive stipend commensurate with experience, network and qualifications. Compensation is based on the local cost of living.
