About Don’t Gas Africa:
Don’t Gas Africa (DGA) is a campaign led by African civil society established in 2022 to ensure Africa is not locked into fossil gas production. DGA works together with aligned movements and campaigns across Africa.
The campaign is hosted by Power Shift Africa (PSA) - a Pan-African climate and energy think-and-do tank established in 2018 to provide policy, advocacy and communications support to different actors from an African perspective. We educate, inform and influence the discourse to amplify the African moral voice in the international climate space.
Duration: 6 Months (renewable once)
Role Overview
Reporting to the Don’t Gas Africa Lead, this position is a perfect fit for those who have just graduated from school and want to be a part of a solutions-oriented journey to push back against gas in Africa and unlock Africa’s green development pathways. This position within a Pan-African think-do- tank offers a unique chance to contribute to a critical mission on a continental scale.
Objectives:
a) To gain practical experience in pushing back against gas as a transition fuel in Africa.
b) Engage with local communities, policymakers, CSOs and other key stakeholders to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaborative Pan-African solutions.
c) Assist in conducting research, analysis and reporting to support DGA’s advocacy and programmatic work.
d) Contribute to DGA’s ongoing advocacy and campaign initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in coordinating and providing support to the DGA team.
Aid in the design, execution and monitoring of campaigns to raise public awareness and push back against gas as a transition fuel in Africa.
Contribute to the analysis of data on fossil fuels, especially gas, including challenges and opportunities in the African context.
Contribute to the development of policy briefs, research papers, or other knowledge products related to resisting gas as a transition fuel for Africa.
Conduct field visits and engage with local communities to understand the grassroots adaptation needs and ensure they feature prominently in DGA’s efforts.
Assist in organising, promoting and running virtual and in-person DGA events and convenings within the continent and provide organising support to nurture their impact and effectiveness.
Build and coordinate strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.
Represent DGA in coalition activities and partner meetings as necessary.
Contribute to DGA’s overall mission and strategic objectives related to Africa.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Climate Change and Development, Environmental Science, Renewable Energy, Sustainable Development.)
Demonstrate a strong understanding and interest in Africa’s energy needs, with a solid understanding of the challenges and opportunities specific to Africa on climate change and just energy transitions.
Ability to conduct thorough research, analysing data and synthesising complex information into clear, actionable insights.
Proficient in both written and verbal communication, capable of crafting compelling messages and engaging with diverse audiences.
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse cultural, political, and economic contexts within Africa.
Ability to develop strategic plans, set goals, and identify the necessary steps to achieve campaign objectives.
Skilled in building and maintaining relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
Demonstrable commitment to social and environmental justice.
Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and the resilience to overcome challenges in dynamic and sometimes uncertain environments.
Ability to work effectively in a team, fostering collaboration and building consensus among diverse groups.
Experience:
The ideal DGA Fellow should have:
Permission to live and work in any African country, preferably in Kenya.
Ability to work in small, dynamic teams. The candidate should be comfortable working remotely.
Knowledge and experience in campaigning and mobilisation.
Ability to analyse environmental issues in terms of campaign opportunities and in terms of overall strategic objectives.
Strong problem-solving, analytical and negotiation skills.
Ability to make and maintain effective contacts and relationships with partners and other stakeholders.
Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people, both verbally and in writing.

Stipend
The DGA Fellow is a full-time position. The candidate will receive a competitive stipend commensurate with experience, network and qualifications. Compensation is based on the local cost of living.
